Despite the name, rice paper is not made from rice. The term originated in the early 1900s when European importers incorrectly believed certain papers were rice-based. Today, marketing language such as “rice paper” refers broadly to highly refined, pulp-based white rolling papers.

Refined white paper tends to produce a cleaner, more neutral smoke because the refinement process removes lignin, a natural compound that can contribute to flavor. Brown paper retains more of these natural components and has a darker, more natural appearance.
